Kilimanjaro National Park
5,895 m · UNESCO World Heritage site
The highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on earth. A single climb passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic ice in under a week — five climate zones stacked on one volcano. No technical climbing, no ropes, no prior mountaineering. Just time, pacing and a crew that knows the altitude.
Serengeti National Park
Roughly 14,750 km² of open plain
Endless grassland broken by granite kopjes, and the stage for the great wildebeest migration — well over a million animals moving on the rains, tracked by lion, cheetah and hyena. Big cat densities here are among the highest anywhere. Best paired with Ngorongoro on a two or three day loop.
Ngorongoro Crater
Crater floor roughly 260 km², walls about 600 m
An intact volcanic caldera holding one of the densest permanent concentrations of wildlife on the continent, including a small population of black rhino. Because the walls contain the herds year-round, a single day on the floor can produce lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and flamingo.
Tarangire National Park
Roughly 2,850 km² · baobab country
Ancient baobabs and the Tarangire River, which draws enormous elephant herds through the dry season from roughly July to October. Quieter than the Serengeti and close enough to Arusha for a strong one-day safari.
Lake Manyara National Park
Rift Valley escarpment · shallow soda lake
A narrow strip of groundwater forest, floodplain and alkaline lake beneath a thousand-foot escarpment. Known for tree-climbing lions, large baboon troops, and flamingo along the shoreline. Exceptional birding — often several hundred species recorded in a season.
Mount Meru, Arusha National Park
4,562 m · 3 to 4 days
Tanzania's second peak and the best acclimatization climb in the country. The trek starts through giraffe and buffalo country with an armed ranger, then follows a dramatic crater rim to the summit, facing Kilimanjaro across the plain at sunrise.
Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai
Remote north · Rift Valley floor
A caustic soda lake at the foot of an active volcano, and the world's main breeding site for lesser flamingo. Harsh, strange, almost empty of other visitors. An add-on for travellers who want the part of Tanzania that most itineraries skip.
Zanzibar
Indian Ocean · optional extension
Where most climbers go to recover. Reef diving, Stone Town, and several days of doing nothing at sea level after a week above 4,000 m. We can arrange the transfer straight from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
